Basic poker variations
Poker is one of the most popular card games in the world. It’s being played online and offline, by professional players, as well as families and small communities, both for fun and for gain. In its long history, several types of poker games have been developed, most of them belong, though, in one of the following four basic variations, depending on their gameplay.
Straight poker
The simplest of all poker variations, straight poker meand that each player is dealt a complete hand of cards, all bets and raises are done in a single round, up to the showdown. This is the oldest, simplest variation of poker. Straight poker is not as exciting and strategic as other variants.
Stud poker
A predefined combination of cards facing up and down are dealt to each player in several rounds, each round being followed by a round of betting. Initial stud poker games featured hands of five cards. The most popular such game is Seven Card Stud, in which each player receives seven cards and has to form a five-card poker hand using any of them.
Draw poker
In a game of draw poker every player gest a full hand of five cards, and has the option to replace several of them – the number of the cards that can be drawn being different from one game to another. The most popular draw poker variant is Five Card Draw, featured in most offline and online casinos around the world, but also played by hobby players and communities. On a personal note: this was the first variant of poker I learned, at the age of 5.
Community card poker
Community card poker, or ‘flop poker’, is a variant of the Stud poker. Players get a certain number of cards of their own – the number depends on the rules of the game played – and several other cards are dealt face up on the table, as community cards. Each player can combine their own cards with the community cards to form a complete hand of 5 cards. These games are the most popular at online poker rooms or online casinos, as they have several betting rounds and are filled with excitement and anticipation. The most well known community card poker game is Texas Hold’em.
With the development of technology, new types of poker games have emerged. Video poker is one of these new variations – this is a single-player version of the game, similar to slots. The players bet a certain amount of credits, and the amount of their winnings depends on the strength of the poker hand dealt by the computer. It’s more a game of chance than a game of strategy. Video poker usually works by the rules of Five Card Draw.
